DUNLEAVY: CHAMPION FOR RURAL SCHOOLS

Mike Dunleavy spent nearly 20 years as an educator in rural Alaska, starting as a school teacher in Koyuk and later movign to Kotsebue, where he eventually became the Superintendent of the Northwest Arctic Borough School District.

It was in rural Alaska where Mike met his wife of 31 years, Rose from Noorvik. Their children were born in rural Alaska and attended local schools. No candidate in this Governor’s race understands rural education better than Mike Dunleavy.

Despite his love for rural Alaska and its people, an unfair rumor has circulated that Mike wants to “shut down rural schools” and force children into boarding schools. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, Mike wants to strengthen educational opportunities in the home areas of students.

Parents and their children shouldn’t be “forced” into any educational setting that doesn’t meet their needs. But rural students should have the same opportunities as their peers in urban communities. As Governor, Mike Dunleavy will fight for better schools, and ensure that all of Alaska’s young people are prepared to succeed in life.
